Earthship

sfeather5334

Following completion of MArch 1 I spent 6 weeks at the home of Earthship in Taos, New Mexico.

I learnt about passive solar earth shelters that are made of both natural and upcycled materials.

I believe that living in one of these types of houses would provide you with shelter, food and water in the worst possible scenarios that could develop through climate change.

I always wanted to explore the possibilities of housing for my MArch 2 project. I felt that learning about the principles of the Earthship community which consists of around 50 homes occupied by 130 residents could help ground my project with similar core values. Simple construction, environmentally friendly and off-grid.

The performance of an Earthship style home was phenomenal. The weather is around 40 degrees everyday during the summer months but when you stepped inside it was less than 21 degrees. Whilst I haven’t tested one during the winter it is said that it can regularly get as low as -10 degrees; but not drop below 19 degrees inside.  All without any form mechanical heating; just proper orientation, high levels of insulation and sinking the home around 1.2m into the ground.

Going forward the principles of Earthship should be adapted by the whole world. Aesthetically however I believe a more conventional looking home could be key to seeing this a preference for the average person.
